How we write our guides

Platform facts, such as plans, fees and features, come from the platforms’ own pages: Shopify’s, WooCommerce’s and WordPress’s, and in a comparison, the other platform’s. Where a platform’s prices differ by country, each country’s figures come from that country’s own page.

Tax and legal facts come from official government sources: HMRC in the UK, each state’s revenue department in the US, and the CRA and the provinces in Canada. Each fact links to the page it came from, and the sources at the end of each guide say the day we read them.

Platform facts, such as Shopify’s plans and fees and app prices, are re-checked every quarter, on the vendor’s own pages for each country. Tax and legal facts, such as sales tax, VAT, GST/HST, and privacy and accessibility rules, are re-checked every 6 months against their official sources.

When a re-check finds a change, the guide is updated and its sources show the new date. A guide shows the day it was published and, once it changes, the day it was last updated.

No. Where a guide covers tax or the law, it says what the official source says and links to it, for you, or your accountant or lawyer, to check. Which rules apply depends on your business. We set up a store’s tax settings with you, to match what you’ve confirmed; we don’t give tax or legal advice.
