A 301 redirect map template for moving a store to Shopify

The short answer

A redirect map lists every old web address on your site and the new address it should send visitors to. Download the template as a CSV, add one row per old address, then import the first two columns, Redirect from and Redirect to, into Shopify, which turns each row into a permanent (301) redirect.

Key facts

As of October 2026

  • Shopify imports redirects from a CSV file with two columns, Redirect from and Redirect to, under Content > Menus > URL redirects.
  • A Shopify store can have up to 100,000 URL redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus.
  • Shopify only redirects an address that no longer loads a page, and its redirects work as soon as they’re saved.
  • Shopify can’t redirect addresses beginning /apps, /application, /cart, /carts, /orders, /services or /shop.
  • Google says 301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.
  • Google advises keeping redirects for at least a year after a site move.

What’s in the redirect map template?

A CSV file that opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets, with these six columns and four example rows to replace. The first two columns are the ones Shopify imports. Free to use for your own site or your clients’.

ColumnWhat goes in it
Redirect fromThe old address, from the first slash: /product/blue-mug/, not the full web address.
Redirect toThe new address on Shopify, the same way: /products/blue-mug.
Page typeProduct, category, page, blog post, image or file, so you can check you’ve covered each kind.
VisitsOptional: its visits from your analytics, so the busiest addresses are checked first.
Checked after launchTick it once you’ve typed in the old address and landed on the right page.
NotesAnything that needs a decision, such as a product you no longer sell.

Why do I need a redirect map?

Because moving to Shopify changes nearly every web address. Shopify puts products under /products/, categories under /collections/ and pages under /pages/, whatever they were called before. Without a redirect, every old link, bookmark and search result leads to “Page not found”.

Google ranks pages by their address, so the redirects are also how it learns where each page went. It says permanent redirects pass the old page’s signals to the new one, and that missing or wrong redirects are among the commonest mistakes in a site move.

Where do my old addresses go on Shopify?

It depends on the platform you’re leaving. On WooCommerce, for example, /product/{name}/ becomes /products/{name} and /product-category/{name}/ becomes /collections/{name}. The example rows in the template show that pattern, and our page for each platform, linked below, lists its own.

What should I watch out for?

  • Sending many old pages to the home page. Google says it can confuse visitors and may be treated as a soft 404 error. Send each page to its closest match.
  • Chains: an old address that redirects to another old address. Point each one straight at its final page.
  • Old addresses that still load a page on Shopify. Shopify only redirects addresses that don’t.
  • Addresses with a query string, such as ?id=12. Shopify says these might not work as expected.

How do I fill in the template?

  1. 01

    List the old addresses

From your old site’s sitemap, your analytics and Search Console’s Links report: every product, category, page and blog post, and any image or PDF that gets visits.

  2. 02

    Add each new address

Its matching page on the new Shopify store, from the first slash. Delete the example rows.

  3. 03

    Check the gaps

Sort by Page type and look for anything without a new address. Decide where each one should go.

  4. 04

    Import it into Shopify

Save a copy with only the Redirect from and Redirect to columns, as a CSV. In the Shopify admin, go to Content > Menus > URL redirects > Import.

  5. 05

    Test it after launch

Type in the old addresses, busiest first, and tick Checked after launch as each one lands on the right page.

Where do these platform facts come from?

From Shopify’s Help Center and Google Search Central, checked on 27 October 2026 and re-checked every quarter. Both change their tools, so check the linked page before you rely on a rule.

What else do people ask?

Can I import this template into Shopify as it is?

Import only the first two columns. Shopify’s own sample file has just Redirect from and Redirect to, so save a copy without the other columns, and without the example rows, before you import it.

Do I write the full web address or just the path?

Just the path, from the first slash, for both columns when the new page is on your own store. Shopify says to use a full web address only for a redirect to another domain.

How many redirects can a Shopify store have?

Up to 100,000, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus.

How long should I keep the redirects?

Google says as long as possible, generally at least a year, and for visitors with old bookmarks, for good.

Can I use it for a move that isn’t to Shopify?

Yes. A redirect map is the same for any site move: each old address and its new one. The first two columns are named the way Shopify’s importer expects; other platforms and servers load redirects in their own way.

Is the redirect map included when you move a store?

Yes. Every old address is redirected to its new one, and the map is part of the US$1,250 price, not an extra.
