| Plan | Paid monthly | Paid yearly, a month | Staff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $49 | $37 | None extra |

What are Shopify’s card fees in Canada?
Shopify takes a fee on every payment made through Shopify Payments, and the rate is lower on the higher plans. If you use a different payment provider, Shopify adds its own fee on top of that provider’s charges.
| Plan | Online, standard cards | Online, Amex and international cards | In person, cards | In person, Interac | Another payment provider |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 2.8% + 30¢ | 3.5% + 30¢ | 2.6% | 15¢ | 2% |
| Grow | 2.6% + 30¢ | 3.4% + 30¢ | 2.5% | 15¢ | 1% |
| Advanced | 2.4% + 30¢ | 3.3% + 30¢ | 2.4% | 15¢ | 0.6% |
| Plus | 2.15% + 30¢ | 3.15% + 30¢ | 2.4% | 10¢ | 0.2% |
So on Basic, a $50 order paid online by a standard card costs $1.70 in fees: 2.8% ($1.40) plus 30¢.
What do a theme, apps and a domain add?
- A theme. On 21 October 2026 the Shopify Theme Store had 24 free themes and 1,319 paid ones. Paid themes cost US$100 to US$500, priced in US dollars, and a theme is a one-time charge, not a subscription.
- Apps. The Shopify App Store has more than 13,000 apps, many of them free. Paid apps usually charge a monthly subscription, and Shopify’s own apps (Bundles, Forms, Inbox, Search & Discovery, Subscriptions and Flow) are usually free, according to Shopify.
- A domain. Shopify’s Canadian domains page says its domains typically start at US$9 a year.
Shopify doesn’t publish a typical monthly spend on apps. When we build a store, every app is named with its monthly cost before it’s installed, so you know the running cost before launch.
Do I need to charge GST/HST on a Canadian Shopify store?
Not while you’re a small supplier. You don’t have to register for the GST/HST until your taxable sales go over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter, or over the last four consecutive quarters. Once they do, you must register and charge it, and you can register earlier if you choose (CRA).
The rate depends on the province. The rate you charge also depends on what you sell, where it’s supplied and who buys it (CRA).

| Alberta | 5% | 0% |

What does it cost to have a Shopify store built?
Shopify’s own cost guide, which gives its figures in dollars, puts custom-built online stores at $2,000 to $20,000 or more. We build at a fixed price instead. It’s in US dollars, the same for every country, and printed before you agree to anything.
| What we build | Price | Scope and time |
|---|---|---|
| A Shopify store | US$1,250 | Up to 50 products, live in 2 weeks |
| Moving a store to Shopify | US$1,250 | Up to 300 products, 3 to 4 weeks |
What the US$1,250 store build includes, and what it doesn’t:
- A theme set up around your products, colours and logo
- Or designed from scratch if the brief needs it
- Up to 50 products loaded
- Payments, shipping and tax set up
- Every app named, with its monthly cost, before it is installed
- Domain connected, a recorded walkthrough, thirty days of fixes
- The Shopify subscription, paid by you to Shopify
- App subscriptions, named and priced before you agree to any
- A paid theme licence if the design needs one
- Product photography
- Product descriptions beyond editing what you send
- Products above the number included
- Anything after the thirty days
Payment is in two stages: half to start, half at launch. See what a new Shopify store includes, or moving a store to Shopify if you sell on another platform now.
How do I work out what my store will cost?
- 01Pick a plan from the table above, and decide whether to pay monthly or yearly.
- 02Add card fees: your expected sales times your plan’s rate, plus 30¢ on each online order.
- 03If you’ll use another payment provider, add Shopify’s fee for your plan on top of that provider’s own charges.
- 04List the apps you need, with each one’s monthly price from its page in the Shopify App Store.
- 05Add the one-off costs: a paid theme if you want one, your domain each year, and the build if you’re hiring someone.
- 06Check whether you’re past the $30,000 small-supplier limit, and set up GST/HST before launch if you are.
For example, Basic paid yearly comes to $444 CAD for the year ($37 × 12), before card fees, apps and a domain.
Questions
Is there a free Shopify plan in Canada?
No. Shopify’s Canadian pricing page offers 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months on most plans, after which the plan’s normal price applies (checked 21 October 2026).
Does Shopify charge a setup fee?
No. Shopify’s pricing page says there are no setup fees on any of its plans.
How much do I save by paying yearly?
On Basic, $144 CAD a year: $37 a month instead of $49. On Grow it’s $396 ($99 instead of $132), and on Advanced $1,536 ($389 instead of $517).
Why is your price in US dollars?
Our prices are fixed in US dollars for every country, Canada included, so one service has one price everywhere. What it comes to in Canadian dollars depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay.
Is the Shopify subscription included in your US$1,250?
No. You pay Shopify directly for the plan. App subscriptions are separate too, each one named and priced before you agree to it, and so is a paid theme licence if the design needs one.
